World of Hyatt Loyalty Program feature image

World Of Hyatt Loyalty Program

Hotel loyalty programs, like frequent flyer programs, cost nothing to join. If you fly and stay in hotels, it is a good idea to sign up for every loyalty program available to you.

With that said, you get little benefit from a loyalty program if you are not loyal. So how do you choose a favorite airline or hotel brand?

Snapshot Verdict

In my opinion, World of Hyatt has the best hotel loyalty program out there. Not only do World of Hyatt points consistently receive the highest valuations from most of the travel analysts out there, but they also have some of the best perks and bonuses for their higher tiered status holders.

Couple that with typically low points required to book rooms, and redemptions starting at 3,500 points, and you have a winning formula.

The main problem with the Hyatt brand is that there are not as many options as you will find with Marriott and Hilton. Marriott has 8,700 properties in 130 countries, and Hilton has 7,600 in 126 countries, while Hyatt only has 1,300 properties in 76 countries.

In addition, it is difficult to obtain the highest tier of their loyalty program, Globalist, which is when the major perks kick in.

What’s Great About The World Of Hyatt Loyalty Program?

World of Hyatt is my personal favorite and my #1 hotel loyalty program, with Marriott as my second, ‘plan B’ program. The main reason for this is the number of points required for redemption.

I recently booked a King suite at the Grand Hyatt Istanbul for 24,000 points per night, and a room with a king-sized bed at the Hyatt Regency in Hong Kong for 12,000 points a night. For comparison, a regular room at the JW Marriott (similar-tiered properties) in Istanbul is 54,000 points a night, and in Hong Kong 42,000.

The Basics

The World of Hyatt loyalty program is a four-level membership: you start with Member as entry-level, then Discoveristand Explorist, and then Globalist on the top rung.

Progression is based upon the number of qualifying nights stayed, Base Points, and/or events hosted. You enjoy the benefits of the tier from the moment you earn it until the February two calendar years later.

So, the best time to earn status is March of a given year: if you earn status in March of 2025, you will have status until February 2027 – almost 2 years!

If you earn 1,000,000 Base Points, you will achieve lifetime Globalist status, which really is an aspirational award.

What Is A Qualifying Night?

This is a certain night for which the member stays at a participating World of Hyatt location and pays an eligible rate or redeems a free night award count towards earning tier status and benefits in the program. This DOES include nights booked with points!

What Is A Qualifying Event?

This is complicated, so read the fine print before you start planning your social or corporate event.

In short, you get lots of Bonus Points for spending money and hosting meetings at a Hyatt property. The meeting or event can consist of renting a block of rooms and/or renting event space.

The points you earn are Bonus Points, and do not count as Base Points; however, for each $5000 spent, you get 2 ‘qualified nights’. So, if you spend $5000x 30 ($150,000), you get 60 qualifying nights and earn globalist status.

Read the fine print and be sure you associate your member number with the meeting. This does not apply to meetings held at Hyatt Vacation Clubs.

The truly dedicated among us should plan an extravagant wedding at a Park Hyatt!

Base Points (not Bonus Points) contribute towards tier status and World of Hyatt benefits. You can earn Base Points through qualifying World of Hyatt spend.

Below, I will break down each level, how to achieve it, and what benefits are offered.

Milestone Rewards

In addition to and separate from the tiered membership levels, members participate in the Milestone Rewards programs. For every 10 qualifying nights or a certain number of Base Points per year, members receive certain perks.

You will be given a choice. These include free nights, bonus points, Suite Upgrade Awards, club access, credits, and guest of honor rewards. See the site’s chart below for specifics:

What Is So Great About Globalist Status?

To summarize, the savings you get from Globalist can really add up and help offset your travel costs.

Free breakfast or club access can be valuable. Food in hotels is expensive, and this can really offset your costs. Where clubs are not available, you receive free breakfast for two adults and two kids.

Resort fees are waived on all stays, which can really save some money! When you book a night on points, valet parking is free! This can save you up to $50 a night.

5 Base Points plus 30% Bonus Points per dollar spent at a Hyatt can quickly rack up, giving you additional free nights.

Suite upgrades can be extremely valuable, especially for those of you with children who need a little extra space to maintain your sanity! Plus, Globalists are guaranteed upgrades to the highest room available, including suites.

Suite Upgrade Awards (SUG) are extremely valuable, and you can begin receiving them after 40 Elite Qualifying Nights or after earning 65,000 Base Points per year (calendar). Globalists are given 4 additional SUGs:

  • One SUG after 40 elite nights or 65,000 base points.
  • Two SUG after 50 elite nights or 80,000 base points.
  • Two SUG after 60 elite nights or 100,000 base points.
  • One SUG after every 10 nights thereafter.

The benefits of these SUGs are that each SUG is good for up to a 7-night stay, you can confirm immediately, and you can gift them! To apply, if you are a Globalist, contact your Hyatt Concierge. If not, call Hyatt (not the hotel), or message @hyattconcierge on Twitter.

And then there’s Guest of Honor. Are you a kind, generous person who wants to share their prosperity with friends or family? If you are a Globalist, you can book a room for someone else using your points or free nights.

They will receive all of the above perks for the length of their stay! You can do this as many times as you’d like, but you are using your points and they get credit (elite qualifying nights) for the stay.

Earning Points

So, how do you earn points to begin your journey to Globalist status? There are several ways, and I’ll break them down for you.

Stays

The easiest and best way to earn points is by staying at Hyatt properties. As a member, you earn 5 Base Points per dollar spent, and this increases with status. In addition, each night spent in a Hyatt property counts toward status.

World Of Hyatt Credit Cards

At the time of writing, there are two World of Hyatt credit cards: the Personal Card and the Business Card.

Both give you automatic Discoverist status, making progressing up the ladder much easier. They also give an additional 4 Bonus Points per dollar spent at Hyatt properties.

At the time of writing, the Business Card gives you 60,000 Bonus Points after you’ve spent $5000 within three months of opening, and has a $199 annual fee.

The Personal Card gives 30,000 Bonus Points after spending $3,000 in the first 3 months, and another 30,000 by earning 2 Bonus Points total per $1 spent in the first 6 months from opening the account, on purchases that normally earn 1 Bonus Points, on up to $15,000 spent.

Again, note that Bonus Points do not count toward tier status, but can be used for free nights.

Each of the cards gives additional perks and tier-qualifying nights (Ts & Cs will apply and are available on the official site, but here’s an overview):

Chase Credit Cards

You can transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points to your World of Hyatt account at a ratio of 1:1 in increments of 1,000 points. This can make excellent use of your Chase points, and is great because the nights booked with WoH points count toward elite tier status.

American Airlines Reciprocal Earning

If you have an American Airlines AAdvantage number (and there is no reason you should not, since the program is free!), you can link it to your WoH number and receive reciprocal benefits.

This means that for every dollar spent on Hyatt stays, not only will you earn WoH points, but you’ll also earn one AAdvantage mile per dollar spent, plus WoH points for every dollar spent on American Airlines flights.

About once a year, Hyatt does a status match with American Airlines. Last year, lower-tier elites on American were granted Explorist status for a year.

Platinum Pro and Executive Platinum members had the option to achieve Globalist status if they stayed 20 nights in 90 days. Concierge Key members are always given Globalist status.

Buy Points

WoH members can buy up to 55,000 points per year, in increments of 1,000.

The only times I would do this would be to top off my account if I needed a few more points, or to gift them to someone. Sometimes there are promotions that could make this option more attractive.

Car Rentals

You can receive up to 25% off with Avis and earn 500 WoH Bonus Points per rental when you provide the Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) number K817700 and your World of Hyatt number.

FIND Experiences

This is an ‘Experience Platform’ created by Hyatt for its members, and includes a plethora of activities designed to enhance members’ wellness and provide interesting destination experiences for them. Horseback riding, snorkeling, and wine tasting are a few examples.

With status and Milestone Rewards, you can get credit toward these experiences, and you will receive 10 Base Points per dollar spent on these experiences.

Combine Points

Every 30 days you can combine or pool points with family members and friends for no charge. Both parties fill out this form to initiate the transfer.

Mattress Runs

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention this trick for earning qualifying nights. I have not personally done this, as it makes me nervous and I have no Hyatt properties near me.

You can book one of the budget-friendly Hyatt rooms for as low as 3,500 points per night. Folks will do this if they are close to Globalist status but won’t be able to stay the nights or spend the money in time to make status.

Find a cheap room close by and book however many nights you need. Check in, get your key, and don’t actually stay there. Stop by from time to time as if you were staying, put out the Do Not Disturb sign, and check out when the time comes. You can do this through the app for most properties, and often get a virtual key.

Be Warned!

There are services that claim to offer ‘virtual mattress runs’ for a fraction of the cost.
Don’t risk it!
People have been banned from the program for doing this, and it is not worth it.

Challenges

From time to time, Hyatt will offer Corporate Challenges, where people with email addresses from certain large companies can achieve Globalist status on an expedited basis. You can see if you are eligible and what you need to do by entering your email address and company on their site – I’ve added the link at the bottom of this article.

Spending Points

So you’ve got a nest egg of points – what’s the best way to spend them and stretch them as far as possible?

Book Free Nights

The best way to spend those hard-earned World of Hyatt points is by booking rooms in one of the Hyatt brands. One of the best aspects of the program is the great redemptions. Rooms start at 3,500 points, and the nights booked with points are still tier-qualifying nights.

With that said, I would not use my points to book very inexpensive rooms. You can get better value out of your points by booking higher-end rooms and suites in Hyatt’s luxury brands.

You can even book all-inclusive resorts beginning at 12,000 points per night, with their uber-high-end Miraval Resorts starting around 40,000 points a night (you receive $175 in resort credit per day).

Upgrading an existing reservation from a regular room to a suite can also be a good use of points, starting at 3,000 points and ranging to 9,000.

Hyatt has the option to use points and cash in combination, but this is not the best use of points. You’ll pay 50% of the cost in points and 70% in cash… plus perks diminish – if you’re a Globalist, you won’t get free parking.

Better to split up your reservation and book some nights with points and some with cash.

Transfer To Airline

This is not a great use of your WoH points. Redemption rates are 2.5:1, so your points will dwindle right before your eyes. That is about 5 WoH points to 2 frequent flyer miles. You must transfer at least 5,000 points and increase in increments of 1,250.

Of course, if you rarely stay at Hyatt properties and have an award flight you are working toward, it could be worth it to you. But you won’t get the best monetary value for your points.

Hyatt partners with 25 airlines, including American Airlines, Emirates, Singapore, Virgin, and British Airways. Points transfers take a while, so plan your booking accordingly.

Hyatt Brands

While Hyatt does have a relatively small global footprint, you can find hotels in every price range, from basic Hyatt Place, Hyatt House, and Caption hotels all the way to the adults-only all-inclusive Secrets resorts.

Hyatt Centric, Hyatt Regency, Grand Hyatt, and Park Hyatt hotels tend to be in the center of the action or in otherwise highly desirable locations. Park Hyatts are the top of the line, most exclusive, and offer excellent dining and spa services.

Alila, Andaz, Thompson, and similar brands tend to focus on local flavor, while giving guests the elite service and quality of hard and soft products they expect.

Unfortunately, Hyatt has eliminated its partnership with Small Luxury Hotels (SLH) of the world and MGM.

However, they launched a partnership with Mr and Mrs Smith. This acquisition has made over 700 luxury and boutique hotels available to WoH members, whereas SLH only had around 350 properties.

Verdict

In my opinion, World of Hyatt is the best hotel loyalty rewards program out there.

Because of their relatively small footprint, they really take care of their most loyal customers. The value of Globalist status is worth the research and efforts required, and is one of the best top-tier elite statuses in the game.

Not only does this status offset many of your travel expenses, but it upgrades your experience when booking or staying at a Hyatt property.
